It is the story of Sukriti. It is also the story of Anu (Name changed)

Sukriti, a Kolkata based women-run NGO working in Kolkata and suburbs for last twenty years for empowerment of women. It had organized a number of vocational courses through experts to impart training to village girls free of cost and also help them to find subsequent employment. Sukriti’s selfless, sincere effort has enabled many women to settle into a better life.Sukriti also runs a small sanitary-napkin manufacturing unit in Kolkata. Anu is an employee in this unit.

Anu is a simple village girl who hails from a low-income family. Like many other village girls, she was married early, couldn’t complete her school education, became a mother of a daughter quickly after marriage, and was subjected to regular domestic violence by her in-laws, both physical and mental. The only thing which makes her different from others is her spirit inside, a great aspiration to come out of all predicament.

She was very happy when she found the job in Sukriti. It opened a new window to her. But that didn’t stop her torture at home. Rather, they became more vindictive. When things became unbearable, she, under the advice of Sukriti, lodged an FIR with the Baruipur Police Station. But unfortunately, they didn’t take any action, or perhaps, it is their custom only. Sukriti also offered her shelter which she didn’t accept. She was still hopeful of reconciliation.

Matter went out of control when on 11.02.2025, she and her daughter were beaten mercilessly by her parents-in-law and sisters-in-law, accompanied by their “friendly” neighbors were thrown out of their house in the late hours of the night, at about 9 PM. Sukriti, after being informed, took her again to Baruipur Police station. They recorded FIR only reluctantly.

It is at this stage, Sukriti approached Madam Sanghamitra Ghosh, Principal Secretary of Women & Child Welfare Dept, Govt of West Bengal, with whom President of Sukriti had some earlier acquaintance in connection with her office job. Madam Ghosh took a serious note of the incident. She asked the concerned Dept officer to take immediate action. With the intervention of Madam Ghosh, the situation changed dramatically. Now polices were all out to help Anu and her daughter, threats to them by her in-laws were stopped and anu was also able to retrieve her belonging.

Anu didn’t return to her home. She is now living in a separate accommodation with her 10 years old daughter.With the help of her present job at Sukriti and some financial assistance from them she was able to maintain the livelihood for two and also to continue her daughter’s education. But her self-respect prevents her to takeoutside help continuously.So, Sukriti had arranged some additional job for her, namely, to work in the reception counter of a charitable dispensary. She is looking for more avenues. And do you know what is her latest aspiration? That is to complete her school education through some open schooling and if possible, to proceed further. We hope there are many “Anus” in our country.

Story of Kuheli Purkait –

Kuheli Purkait has completed our Nursing training programme in 2021-2022 is an widow with one son with no family income, no help from her mother’s house neither from her in laws house. she is left for starvation with school pass education, she managed to put her son into a free boarding school and do all odd jobs to earn her living. After getting this nursing training and 3months hospital training she is placed now in house duty for nursing an elderly lady getting Rs. 22000/- per month . She will continue the so long the patient survives.
